Hello,
I'd like to hear other's reports on good rivers to kayak.
My favorite is the Pine River near Cadillac. I've also been on the Au Sable and the Lower Platte, both slow movers and better for relaxing than excitement.
Does any one have any info on the Upper Platte or other fast rivers?

I was going to say The Pine also, went there many years anually to camp and canoe.
AuSable is good too , the Rifle is too shallow.

I don't know if it's my absolute favorite, but I survived a trip down the Sturgeon this summer...it was fast, and all of us ended up taking an unplanned did in he water...the only thing that didn't survive is my Yorkiepoo's swim ring we use for him to ride on...it took a hit early on in the trip and deflated....I've since patched it but am looking for a replacement.

Pere Marquette is GREAT. We always start at the M-37 Bridge and stay right there also at the Red Moose Lodge in Baldwin, MI, of course. On any given Sat. or Sunday there are probably 1,000 canoes or kayaks that go down it so If you don't want a crowd the week days are the best. Baldwin Canoe is right across the Hwy. from Red Moose Lodge so that makes it real easy to go back and forth. Some of us bring our own kayaks and they welcome that also. They also welcome pets and have a cute little dog named Rose of their own. Great people! Try it, you'll like it!
Did I mention the 7 person Hot Tub for the sore muscles!!!

Hands down my favorite is the Jordan, definitely faster than the Lower Platte. Some swift stretches, some slow - but ALL BEAUTIFUL.

Can you give me any iinfo on your Sturgeon River trip? Where you kayak'd from and to..... time on the river etc. We are hardly professionals but definately "experienced" - have kayak's the PM many times and LOVE the Pine.... prefer faster water. Also would like tohear anyones suggestions on a reasonable place to stay two nights along the sturgeon.... dosen't have to be fancy .... just clean and fairly accessable along the river.
Anyone who has done the Jordan ... I would love to hear about your trip and lodging recommendations

We kayaked the Sturgeon for the first time in Aug '08. First trip - we put in at the Sturgeon River Campground (were we camped) and took out at Rondo Road. I believe that was around 3 hours. I'm not a veteran kayaker, but have done The Jordan dozens of times, and I think The Sturgeon is very strong and tricky at times. While, I didn't dump (my husband did) - I did get caught up in logs twice and turned around a few times. What I found really challenging was the different direction of streams from the banks to the middle of the river. We can't wait to get back - I highly recommend this river for someone who prefers faster water. Again, we camped at The Sturgeon River campground, beautiful campground (that is also ATV friendly). You can camp or they have two small cabins (no bathrooms in the cabins, but very close to the shower houses which are extremely clean).

The Jordan is a must - beautiful river in a beautiful valley. We've kayaked from Graves Crossing to Rogers Rd - I think it can be done in 3 hours, but we made it a 5 hour trip. We've also done the rafting trip in the winter, which is a must do. Really can't put into words the beauty of this river, have to experience it for yourself. There is some swift water and some slow.

Thank you all for your input! We have had several great weekend trips since the 4th of July!
Did the Jordan.... very beautiful, wish it was longer! Saw gorgeous wildflowers on the banks! Few stopping opportunities tho.
Sturgeon- Again, beautiful.... definitely narrow and fast! If we could have been the only ones on the river it would have been great but the day was jammed with inexperienced canoers and rafters... and we all agreed that this was not a river for those beginners, actually quite dangerous as the narrow meanderings and snags were a recipe for panic for many.
Pine - still top on our list, any one of the lengths of the river are great!
Manistee- gorgeous,wide but moves well, no worries about shallow spots either! We're looking forward to doing a fall color tour through the "valley" with the beautiful view of the woods on both sides!
Pere Marquette... always our fall back if we don't want to travel far, can enjoy so many different stretches, with easy access ... not tooo challenging but beautiful!
Rogue River- We live in Rockford and many an evening or sunday afternoon we hit the 2 1/2 hour trip starting below the Rockford dam to the Grand River..... it got WAY shallow before last week's storms but if you love fishing or just seeing the fish the schools of trout are unbelievable and the water is most often crystal clear!
