I was told this past weekend that the 550 engine on the Arctic Cats are only good for about 6000 miles before they die, any one have a problem with this motor?  Dont know if the person was just trying to sell me a new sled or if this was in case a fact.

I can tell you that I own two (2) 550's and they each have around 10,000 miles on them and I have never had an engine problem. I generally handle my own PMs and repairs. I might also add that I added the Holtzman Multi-Range Vari-Flow systems on both sleds several years ago. I bought both sleds new and at the same time.

The reason for buying them was the research I had done on them prior to buying them.  I read of others who owned them and had as many as 20,000 miles and had still not done any major engine work.

In my opinion, the 550 is probably one of the most reliable engines AC ever built.  But then, maybe I'm biased since I have ridden all of the mountain ranges from the Rockies to the Adirondacks and most of Michigan and even tho they are carbed sleds, with the Holtzman venturis, I have never even changed jets. I just adjust for elevation and temperature. I've ridden from 0 ft elevation to 9,500 ft elevation. Can't seem to get enough.

By the way, I am not a salesperson for AC, nor do I care to sell either of the cats. I just happen to love them. I have heard horror stories from other sled owners of all brands, including AC, but I have no complaints. Just take care of your sled, and don't abuse it.......!

thanks for the reply, I kind of figured that was the case, just trying to get me to buy another sled. Any motor should run for a long time as long as they are treated right. I just got rid of a 1997 Cadillac that had over 300,000 miles on it. the body was falling apart but the car started every day.

I had one a few years back. Put on just under 10,000 miles with no problem at all.

Say, I might add that it is very important that you keep check on your fuel/air mixture either through Vari-Flows or proper jetting. That will keep you on track (pardon the pun)
