2002 Z-370 w/7,400 miles.  No studs, pipe or other mods.  100% stock.  Owned since new and have run nothing but AC factory oil.  Has been a great sled with zero significant problems...til now.

Started acting up (stalling, poor performance, bogging) and eventually died.  Compression test = 50 on PTO side and 110 on Mag side.  Pulled heads and jugs and found PTO side piston missing part of skirt.  Pulled engine and found crack in lower half of case from outward pressure.  See picture. :(

Separated case and found double roller bearing on PTO end of crank mostly disintergrated.

Piston/clyinder appeared to be getting oil.  Even though dark in picture, there is oil film built up on piston and cylinder is not scratched at all.

Can do repairs myself, but before sinking too much money in parts would like to know if failure was result of something typical for this engine or just bad fortune.

Any comments (other than the usual, "buy a Ski-Doo") would be great!

Thanks,

Greg

Greg,

You have a very reliable motor there. As far as the skirt breaking I would blame that on 7400 miles. I have never seen a peice that big break, causing that much damage to the case.

I had my Z 370 seize up with 375 miles.  The PTO side bearing failed and locked up the engine.  It was 21 days out of warranty, but Arctic Cat paid for the parts and I paid for the labor   $320.00.  That was in 2003.  I now have 4000 miles on it and it runs very good.  My wife rides it all over Northern Michigan.
