Just getting started in the world of GPS. I am wondering if it is possible to share .gpx files for other Michigan snowmobiler's to enjoy. There are several, two tracks that we just pass by that may offer different scenery, or adventure.  I ride a average of 2500 miles a year. Many do more and less. I plan to explore different areas with the safety of knowing my location. If I find a great new loop, I would like to share it with other's to enjoy. What say you?

I use a Lowrance GPS 3500C,  I have a removable SD card.  Most GPS have a different language it understands.  I have most all trails mapped and signed in the Caddilac, irons, Wellston and Baldwin areas.  Along with some in MN, WI and UP  Al

I have been using Lowrance for 12 years. I used a Lowrance iFinder H2O color handheld past two years on my sled. It's waterproof and you can use software to load your own maps or buy preloaded cips. I also have a garmin Rino GPS radio I like alot. Loads maps same way. Color screens are much easier to read.

well I really like mine,  It has a 5" color display and buttons big enough to use with your gloves on.  I had to custom mount mine,  I put it flush with the handlebar pad.  Mine has a small door for the SD card   the card is nice if you want to down load your trails onto your computer, I rarely do though.  Since the 3500C is color, I have different colors for different trails. ie: trail 6 is blue and trail 5 is red.  I can also input stop signs, fuel stops, lunch stops, bridges ect.  The Lowrance 3500 C is usually known for marine applications, this make it very water resistant and user friendly.  I know you can buy some of the Lowrance product with an intergrated antenne, although mine did not come this way.  I mounted the antenne puck flat on the gauge pod under the windshield.  Yamaha SXR

I believe some day the manufactures will have GPS standard, integrated into the gauge cluster,  this would eliminate the need for a mechanical speedo, which are very subjective to accuracy.  I rarely pick up any trail maps now.  I do see in the future a person could sell the trail maps on a SD card with advertising, lodging, food and fuel stops, similar to the trail maps.  Allan

Thats just like my dads, those are nice.  Catgirl you mean he wants to simulate his own trail, like when hes just sitting at home?  The h20 lowrance can, I can make my own trails sitting at my desk, the only thing bout that is your not actually on the trail, you are drawing a trail on your screen, and you can save it.  Only problem with the lawrence h20 color is I believe they dont make it any more, my cousin owns sunrise electronics in petosky, and I believe he told me that.

Mapping is available on most GPS units.  some do take a memory card, notice in the lower rt hand corner on the Photos of my Lowrance unit.  There is a small door opening, their for housing the SD card.  I recommend the Color units.  A mounted unit is also much easier to operate than a hand held unit.  Allan

I would not get him a unit like the one in the photos above. It must be permanently mounted on the machine with separate power for the antenna which also must be mounted. He must also have a four stroke sled or a power converter. I have the Lowrance BajHa Color GPS like the one in the photos on my ATV. The hand held H2O does everything the big unit does and can be used on any machine, car, boat, walking or what ever he does. They have internal memory and a removable chip. You can down load maps or get pre-loaded chips. Get him something he can use more than 3 months a year. From some one who has been using GPS systems on all my equipment for 15 years the hand-held unit get the most use hands down! The big one is nice but if your looking at that when moving getting lost is the least of your trouble. Hitting a tree is more likley, I KNOW!

Dave, me and my dad are having problems with the battery life on our h20's, do you have this problem.  Its like you have to have new or good batterys to run it, EVEN if its plugged into the power acc. on snowmobile, I thought the power acc. was so you didnt have to have batterys in it?  do you have this problem?

You only have to have 12V DC power to the head unit,  Your baja unit is the exact same type of unit and can be wired into the electrical system.  I just tapped into the DC power supply.  I do not have electric start either.   yes the unit is perminatly mounted, not a problem for me.  I would rather have a screen you can see and use. just my preferance.  I run the same unit in my Suburban and a raymarine 12" display in our boat.  Get a quality unit that is easy to see and use and he will be happy.  Good luck  Al

Never had a problem. I use only rechargeable radio Shack batteries. The white ones hold charge longer. Store batteries never have move than 1/2 charge and Duracell are the worst. Mine will last all day on the batteries with a good charge. Also works fine with the 12v plug with or without batteries in it. Better check the output on those sleds.

P.S. I currently own 13 GPS untits of differnt kinds and have gone through 30 others in the past. BIG IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER!

Wow! Now i'm really confused! lol.  maybe i'll just get him a winch instead. (he likes to try to boondock with an Apex.) not fun getting unstuck. i keep telling him he needs to switch to a cat crossfire. he likes his yami's though.

well he has a 4-stroke so getting power to the gps shouldn't be a problem? we only snowmobile right now but eventually would like to get a couple quads. where do you keep the handheld when you're riding? pretty much all he can fit is a small handlebar bag on his sled. if i get him one that you mount do i also need power accessories? is there a cost difference between the two?

thank you all for your help. :) i really appreciate it.

I have Velcro on the dash of my sleds, atv's, trucks and PWC's, it stays tight on all just fine. On and off in 1/2 second. I pocket it sometimes as a backup. If you are relying on GPS in an area your not familiar with and it quits working guess what, your lost. I keep a compass or a spare always. I carry it with me at all times just in case I need to find the closest gas station, restaurant or hotel. For your first or only GPS it is the only way to go. Also remember you can't leave it on your machine overnight in very cold weather. I have found that at -20 the liquid crystal screens can freeze never to work again. Seen this twice. As long as they are on they produce enough heat to stay on fine. If you leave them off in extreme cold they will need to warm back up again to see the screen. If you ever read any of our sledding stories you can see we run in very extreme conditions and in some very rugged terrain at times.  Believe me when you are ridding  it does not matter how big the screen is, your not going to be watching it unless your are very foolish. You are going to stop and get your bearings. Keep it in your top pocket. 50,000 miles on sleds over the past ten years and about the same on ATV's. No one releys on GPS's for every day work more than I do. Garmin or Lowrance, end of my input.

I haven't tried rechargable's yet, also, my gps wont work without batterys (or my dads) plugged into car/snomobile, Still has to have good batterys to work.  I love my h20 gps, but it makes me mad when it wont even work plugged in to a good sorc of power without fresh batterys.

Catgirl, dont get me wrong, these are awesome gps, I bought a bracket for mine, they sell them at most elctronic stores, I mounted mine right to my handlebar bracket ( iI have an apex to), plus ur apex has a cig light to plug into, I rewired my cig light to stay on when I shut the engine off, basically run it directly to the battery, plus the bracket allows to take the gps out and in ez, I have been useing duracell batterys, thats probably my problem, I only get a few hours out of them batterys, I'm gonna try the rechargables.

I have used mine in -20F in MN. last year,  It took a little bit, 3 to 5 minutes for warm up to have full visibility of the screen.  I have heard of people having LCD screens freeze but I have yet seen one in person.  I never take mine off or out of my suburban.  I like being able to glance down at the screen and being able to read efficiantly.  Once I have mapped out an area.  I save it for future travels.  I really like being able to boondock with confidence I know where I am.  Every body has their preferances,  I just grew up with the Lowrance unit in our boats.  Allan

Jeremy from V Mapping sent me an SD card filled with every state trail in lower and upper Michigan for inspection.  It looks very good.  I sent a recomendation  back, but overall I am very pleased with the Mapping.  I beleive he is offering at a very good and fair price.  check them out.  Al

I test ran the mapping that V Mapping is providing today.  The trails are very accurate.  I ran trails today which I had never ridden before.  I was very confident or the mapping.  Some corners or intersections may be off 500 ft. but other wise extremely accurate and easy to read. It sure is nice having a nice sized GPS mounted and in color which you can see at a glance, where exactly you are and what is coming up.   Al
