What is going with being able to ride ATV's on the shoulder of county roads?  I heard there are new laws regarding this issue.  Does anyone know what the new regulations are?

I am wondering the same thing but for Roscommon county Houghton lake in the heights area I saw alot of them along m55 this past weekend not on the road but on the pathway along it.

Last I heard was it was allowed but only between trailheads.

Thank you ... your list is very helpful to everyone ... I understand several counties has since pass the same law to allow ORV's on their county roads ... do you know which counties have since pass these laws?  A complete list would be very helpful.  :)

Great info that I have been waiting to hear.  Could you please tell me where you found the information on Montmorency County and what is the "state requirement for obtaining the necessary license required for ORV vehicles". Secretary of State web site indicates that they don't license ORV vehicles?  I'm a little confused... Probably an old age thing.

Thanks -Dale-

To my knowledge you are only required to have a DNR ORV sticker that you can get at any place that sells hunting licenses. I always get mine at my local hardware store I have also purchased them at wal-mart

Thanks, that was the "license" I could think of, but the way it's worded, left me wondering... I live in Dundee, so I usually get my ORV stickers at Cabela's. Just another excuse to go there.  Now if I can just verify the section on "forest roads". I hope it's correct, but I know people who have been stopped and in some instances, cited in the past.. I'm having a little trouble believing that all the forest roads in Montmorency County are now open to ORV use.

Thanks again -Dale-

Good luck with that I go by the assumption that if it has a road sign on it it is not a forest road if it doesn't have a road sign on it I assume it is a forest road and unless it is posted open then I don't use it.

best thing to do is this
1) Call county which you intend to visit. Get a copy of the County road map mailed to you. Carry with you while out Atving.
2)Go to said Counties website and print/review their ORV ordinance. Not ever County has every County Road Open.
3) Visit http://WWW.VVMAPPING.COM or follow this link.

Thanks again to all who replied.. That's more along the lines of what I thought the situation was. After reading the .pdf posted for Montmorency, Section 5, which says forest roads and trails are open, I thought maybe the laws had changed.  Thanks again.
