i've got a 99 MXZ 500 that i bought used at the strat of last season with 2500 miles on it.Last yr it started fine , but this yr i'm having problems starting it. i put new plugs in it ,the same kind that were in it.It looks to me that it's getting to much gas or something . When i try to start it and it wont start pull the plugs and there all wet .If i clean the plugs off and pull the cord a few times with the kill switch off then  turn it on and give it a tad bit  gas and pull it it usually starts. i can ride it then shut it off and sometimes i have to do the same to it when it's warm to get it to start too.

Anybody got any ideas on what it could be or how to fix it besides buying a new sled?

Thanks for your question.  Two things to ask--

1.  Was the sled summarized at the end of last season?

2.  Are you using last year's fuel?  Was any "stabil" put in the gas?

The carbs may need to be cleaned...hope this helps.

no it didn't get summarized last season.  fuel had stabil in it ,is there a chance of being to much stabil in the fuel since there was less then a 1/4 of a tank?

but the carbs needing cleaned is what i was thinking too.

is there any easy to clean the carbs with out taking it to the shop?

I usually pull the carbs off the sled and take the bowl off and pull the slide out, hose it all down with some carb cleaner, wipe it down and throw it back together.  You also want to check the jets and make sure they are not plugged.  The smallest piece of anything will plug a jet.

Also, my buddy has a mxz 500.  His starting procedure is to prime it three times then give it a pull, it usually starts on the second or third pull, then when it is starting to stall out, prime it one more time, this should keep it running, and unless its really cold it should be good to go.

Hope this helps!

I had one of those and I hated it.  Have you tried first putting new plugs in then have someone hold the throttle down while you pull?  When I ended up flooding mine thats what I had to do and it worked everytime.
I saw a bunch of people on the side of the trail in the UP trying to start one of those and I suggested that they do that and it worked.
Good luck and get rid of that sled.

the carbs were dirty still and need to be recleaned  once that was done it started right up with out even giving it that lil gas that you usually have to do .and still been starting right up with out giving it gas .when it's warmed up it even starts up better.

Try turning the gas off when you shut it down, alot of older ski doo's flood because the engine sits to low.  I used to have this same problem with a Mach after I started shutting the gas off the problem went away.
