In 2006 I picked up a new Outlander 800 and now have a few thousand miles on it.
I have been through swamps, climbed many hills, and have found the top end, 72 MPH. I like the way it handles in corners and over bumps. I have the factory racks and bags that work very well. Also I have found the wench to be indispensable many times. I have a Lowrance Baja color GPS mounted on front. It’s easy to see and read with a large screen. It’s great for finding your way around. So far I like everything about the Outlander except the brakes. They seem to be poor when wet. If you have one let us know how you like yours. I will be trying the New Artic Cat 1000cc this summer to see how it stacks up with my CanAm, I will let you know!

Yes those 800's are awesome, a friend of mine has one and it will pull wheelies going down hill. I'm still riding a Honda Rubicon 500 4x4. It has the auto trans or you can shift it electronically too. This makes it nice when you want a higher gear and a lower speed, to keep the power off the wheels. This works very well when you are on loose soil or snow and don't want to spin your tires. This ATV has the Honda build in GPS and works good. Over all a great ATV, not a lot of suspension travel, but Honda's last forever. Tim

I purchased a Honda Rancher last year and my wife picked out a Recon because it is smaller and easier for her to handle.  We typically ride the trails between Oscoda and South Branch/Rose City, but are planning to take a week in the UP during the last week in July.

I have read your posts on trips you have taken in the UP, and don't really know where to start ....how to plan the trip that is.  Our machines are both 2 X 4's, so we can't really ride in area's where we could get stuck, however, since I am taking my wife, I need to find trails that she will enjoy.  If I was going with other guys, I would not be as concerned, but it will be just the two of us.  I was planning to go to the Seney/Newberry area, because I am familiar with the trails from snowmobile riding, however, I know these trails can be different in the summer, so am unsure where we should go.  I thought the trails up toward the Two Hearted River might be a possibility.

Do you have any suggestions for us?  Our machines are set up with travel bags, a fuel caddy, and I have a Garmen gps unit mounted on my machine.

Also, I am open to taking my machine on some trips like I used to snowmobiling with the guys......I'm just older now (50), so I don't push the speed as much as I used to (and the rancher is only capable of about 40 mph, so that's a limitation as well).

Thanks for your time.

Between Seney and Grand Marais is a nice area to ride. Lots of nice back roads easy to ride.

The recreational trails between of Munising to Manistique is also a great place with well marked trials: http://www.fishweb.com/recreation/orv/maps/alger_co/  Take the wife to Wetmore, get a room at the Super 8. The trail starts at the gas station next to the hotel. Many  gas and food stops along these trails. The trails are either old rail grades or good dirt roads. The wife would like that area.

Futher to the west trail 2 from Crystal falls is very nice. You can ride south east to Wisconsin or west to Lake Gogebic and north to Copper Harbor if you like. All well marked, wide easy to ride trails.  Phot0s here: http://www.fishweb.com/recreation/orv/stories/crystalfalls07/index.html

Thanks.  We will check this out.  A motel next to the trail would be great.

How does one know which dirt roads can be used.....are they all open in these areas?

Maps you can get at the hotel or next door at Munising Pro Sports and a lot of business in town. The online map in the link above shows most of them. There are more. If the numbered signs on a forest road run vertical, you can ride it, horizontal no. Unless otherwise maked for ATV's like in the photo below. Most rodes are makered NO ATV's if they are off limites The Coalwood and Haywire Rec. Trails are very easy to follow. Parts of the snowmobile trail and lots of forest roads and two tracks.

Hello Again,

Just one more question.  As we discuss options, my wife wondered if you have stayed at any cabins that are next to the trail system.  Any suggestions for cabins away from the larger towns where we can unload and ride?  I really appreciate your input.  Once we do this, we will be much better informed.

Just west of Crystal Falls at the Chippewa Resort. Trail runs right behind the place.  You can ride from there all over the western U.P. http://www.fishweb.com/recreation/orv/stories/crystalfalls07/index.html

Hill Top Cabins in Grand Marais you can ride from. Between there, Seney and Paradise there is lots of riding. http://www.fishweb.com/maps/alger/grand_marais/lodging.html
