It's called a "fish stick" but we call them giboo's up in the keweenaw.
I have about 400 feet of steel line on mine. The line wraps around the fish stick (there is a track on the inside that's about 1 inch deep) and you hook a leader to the end of the steel line. Then you find out how deep you are fishing and drop your line down in. We go by each wrap is one foot.
Find the bottom and just jig or some call it bob the bottom. As soon as you feel the hit, yank up on the fish stick fast and hard. I drop the fish stick on the bottom of the boat and just start pulling up the steel line hand over hand.
The steel line will pool up on the boat floor as long as you don't pull the line up against the side of the boat. If you do, the line will get tangled and you will not want to fish that way again :-)
Don't let the line get any slack or you'll loose your prize.
I do have more and better pictures of the fish stick that I'll post later. Also have a few pictures and video's of me pulling one in.
