If your not dead set on being right in Munising.  The Buckhorn Resort is between Wetmore and Munising.  Trail 7 goes right thru the parking lot about 5 minutes off trail 8 RR grade.  Real cheap rooms, hot shower, gas, bar, and resturant on site.  Very sled friendly!!!!

Starry Knight Thanks for that information. We live in FL and have always gone to the west end of the UP. This year we've decided to venture more central. With your recommendation and viewing the cabin online, we have booked the second week of February, We're so excited!! Do you happen to have any tips on acessing the main trail from the cabin and any great back country riding in this area?

Thanks in advance..

Hi Billy,

That's funny that your going East this year, as my group has always sledded the East end of the U.P. and we are heading West this year.  I always love going to new places, and we have done every trail in the East over the past few years and wanted to try something different.

You will get to the DreamCatcher lodge from Hwy. 28 by going south on Federal Forest Hwy. 13, then West on Powell Lake Road to the cottage.  From the Hwy. 28 turnoff, the lodge is about a 12 min. car ride, and the gas station at the corner of Hwy. 28 and Hwy. 13 is the closest gas station.

Trail 8, which runs East-West actually crosses Hwy. 13, and you will see it about half way to Powell Lake road.  Trail 8 is where we began all of our travels from the lodge.  To get to it, we headed down Powell Lake Road, heading towards Hwy. 13, and found a small, unmarked trail on the north side of the road that took us up to Trail 8 without having to ride the roadside.  It was located fairly close to Hwy. 13, about a quarter mile or less before you reach it.  I'm afraid that was about as adventurous as our group got with going off trail, as we are a little older and don't like getting stuck.

Some observations that you may find helpful:

The trail was very difficult to find in the town of Munising.  Once you pass the gas station, head left at the first side street, and the trail picks up at the end of it.  We had a very difficult time finding it, as the signage was missing.

Foggy's bar and grill in Christmas was our favorite place for food & fun.  You grill your own steak.

The heavy snow thins out as you head South.  We ran in to problems towards Manistique a couple of times.  This years snow seems much better though, so this probably won't be an issue.

The trip to Marquette has a long stretch of Railroad, which is beautiful, and allows you to put some miles on quickly.  There is a sculpture park on the trail too that makes for a nice place to stop for a break.  Plus, there is a scenic lookout at the top of Mt. Marquette that is beautiful.

The bar/restaurant in Seney is very small, and is always packed.

Grand Marais is one of our favorite destinations there too.

I wrote up the story of our trip last year at my website, if your interested.

Hope this helps, and have a great trip!
